Richard Shindell

with Jesse Ruben

Novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies.

Originally from New York, now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, and expand our sense of just what it is a song may be. His songs are delivered in his dark and winding baritone, achieving a perfect mix of melancholy, descriptiveness, and spirituality. Richard’s music ranges from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war, and religion. He has opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs) and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell. Richard joined with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky in 1998 to form folk supergroup Cry Cry Cry. Recorded over three years, his most recent album, Careless (2016), was called “…a fascinating and eclectic collection of music” by San Diego Troubadour.

“Occasionally an artist has a night that makes even skeptics think, ‘O.K., maybe he is the best.’ Richard Shindell achieved this.”

—Ann Powers, New York Times
