For over three decades, John Gorka’s keen ear has picked up the stories of those along his path, folding them into poetry and song. Few contemporary songwriters coax language as deftly as John. His versatility on guitar and piano keeps his sets musically interesting, while his rich baritone effortlessly executes his bidding. “The old songs ring as true as they ever did, and the new ones are just as good. (Indie Acoustic Project).” John got his start at Godfrey Daniels, a venerable coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. In 1987, he released his first album, I Know, to popular and critical acclaim. His albums and touring brought new accolades, and Rolling Stone called him “the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement.” Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, and in 2010 he joined with Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson to form the folk supergroup Red Horse. His album Before Beginning was named the 2016 IAP Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year. He has released 16 studio albums, including his two most recent, True In Time and Live At Tales from the Tavern II.
“Listening to John Gorka sing, one can get goose bumps all over.”
